AWS reacceleration thesis warrants 25% Tranche 1 position at $234-236 with $230 stop; scale to full weight on confirmed technical recovery
The Neutral Analyst's middle path is the sustainable trade. AWS reacceleration to +37% YoY (fastest in 18 quarters, beating consensus by 580 bps) validates the $169B capex thesis and provides fundamental catalyst. However, the ~32x clean forward P/E, FCF deterioration (-$8B to -$18B), deeply negative MACD (-3.63), and hawkish Fed headwinds justify disciplined sizing. Reducing Tranche 1 from 40% to 25% and tightening the stop from $228 to $230 captures the opportunity while protecting against technical fragility. Hard exit triggered if 50 SMA crosses below 200 SMA while price is below both (death cross). Position flips to Underweight if any two of: AWS growth decelerates below 25% YoY, clean P/E re-rates above 40x, confirmed death cross, Q4 guide below consensus by >3%, or subprime delinquencies accelerate materially.

Amazon's AI infrastructure capex is being monetized in real time through AWS reacceleration to +37% YoY, combined with massive operating leverage (operating income +29.6% YoY on +16.6% revenue growth) and an asymmetric technical setup following a confirmed capitulation reversal, making the current entry point a cyclical pullback in a structural uptrend.

AMZN is in a bearish correction from the May 8 high of $278.56, having dropped approximately $52 (~18.7%) over 12 weeks. The July 30 session produced a potential capitulation reversal candle: price bounced from $231.06 to $235.50 on heavy volume of 78.76M shares, reclaiming the 200-day SMA by $0.75. However, price remains below the 10 EMA ($236.29), 50 SMA ($246.38), and Bollinger midline ($242.41) — only the 200 SMA has been marginally recaptured. RSI bounced sharply from 33.31 to 44.41, MACD histogram is decelerating (selling exhaustion signal), and the lower Bollinger Band ($226.80) held by ~$0.15 on July 29. The tactical recommendation is HOLD for existing longs using $234.75 (200 SMA) as the critical support line; new longs should wait for a close above $246.38 or a successful retest of the $226–230 zone with RSI divergence.

When: Confirmed 50 SMA reclaim at $246 with above-average volume, RSI >55, and 5-10 trading days of basing
Then: BUY 35% of target
Q3 guide 'miss' is management conservatism, not weakness—the $4B shortfall on $199.5B base is expected upside setup
↩ rebuts: “Bear Claim #2: Q3 guide came in 2% below consensus”
· concedes: Bear concerns about negative FCF are understandable but misdirected—cash engine is roaring at $26B quarterly OCF; 19% correction is real price pain in the short term; High beta of 1.46 means elevated volatility; Q3 guide did miss consensus by ~2%; Buyback reduction is a mechanical EPS headwind in the near term
Amazon's AI capex cycle represents a structurally deteriorating compounder where $169B in capex (4.0x AWS revenue ratio) is being deployed into uncertain-demand infrastructure while reported earnings are inflated by one-time gains, masking a clean P/E of ~38-40x at a time when competitive headwinds, consumer deterioration, and a no-cut Fed environment make the 1:1 risk/reward profile decidedly unfavorable.
· concedes: The Q2 beat was a real beat and AWS growth at 37% YoY is genuinely strong; Bezos-era operational excellence and Jassy's capabilities are real, not fabricated; Custom silicon (Trainium) is a legitimate hedge against Nvidia dependency; Advertising revenue is a real and growing profit driver (though lagging indicator); Amazon's $101.8B cash pile and $26B quarterly OCF provide real balance sheet strength; AI infrastructure demand is genuinely growing — the bull is right that the secular trend exists
→ vs conservative: Framing negative MACD and 200 SMA proximity as 'insufficient confirmation' causes paralysis and missed generational entries; waiting for 50 SMA reclaim at $246 means chasing $10 higher with worse risk/reward
→ vs conservative: 1:1 risk/reward framing is intellectually dishonest — entry at $235 with stop at $228 ($7 downside) against $260-280 upside target is 4:1 or 5:1, not 1:1
→ vs conservative: $169 billion capex with negative FCF is investment not value destruction; company self-funding with fortress balance sheet and 52.9% operating cash flow growth
→ vs conservative: Bear case doesn't account for multiple expansion as AMZN repriced from consumer cyclical to hybrid cloud-AI infrastructure play
→ vs neutral: 'Fair but not cheap' valuation assumes post-earnings ramp is already priced in, but Q2 print saw only 3.9% intraday gain before after-hours surge — full repricing hasn't happened
→ vs neutral: DCA approach will work but at a worse average price than initiating at $235
→ vs neutral: 89% probability of no Fed cuts is bullish, not bearish — removes rate-sensitivity headwind; AMZN AI capex is secular not cyclical

FINAL TRANSACTION PROPOSAL: HOLD — Amazon presents a classic high-quality hyper-scale compounder at a cyclical pullback with 16.6% YoY revenue growth accelerating and margins expanding. The company is front-loading AI infrastructure capex ($200B+/year) which will suppress FCF for several quarters but positions AWS for the next decade of AI workload demand. Valuation is fair at TTM P/E of 28x, Forward P/E of 23.7x, and PEG of 1.24—neither cheap nor expensive relative to the growth profile, with the stock trading ~16% below its 52-week high near the 200-day MA support level. For new entries, dollar-cost averaging during pullbacks toward $234.66 rather than chasing at $245+ offers the best risk/reward given balanced rather than asymmetric upside at current levels.
